How much grain do I need to feed?

I have a 4yr old, 15.2hh TN walker/Standardbred cross gelding. I am riding him 3-4 times a week for 1-2hours each time. There is pretty much no pasture to eat where he is at. I’ve been giving him hay but a few days ago started graining him. Right now I am using a plastic ice cream gallon bucket to measure out the feed. I just bought a mill mixed 10% sweet feed. Anyways, how much should I be feeding him? Right now I am giving him about an inch filled of the 1 gallon bucket twice a day. I know you are suppossed to do it by weight.. but around how much should I give him (according to the 1 gallon ice cream bucket).

The reason I started to grain him is because he needs to gain weight.

Well really, there is not way to measure in that gallon. My advice to you would be to drive out to your local feed store, tack store or whatever you have around and pick up a “feed scoop” Their usually green or silver metal and come in a variety of sizes. I would pick up a 3qt scoop (runs about $4) and with the riding your doing, and low grass I would give anywhere from 1 1/2 – 2 full scoops. See how he does with that for a week, and than slowly adjust it to his needs. Best of luck
